Note: In Claude, automations are Scheduled tasks. You need a paid plan and the desktop app. This builds on the skill you build with the Skills guide. The automation runs that skill. Create the skill first if you haven't.
What is an automation, and when do you build one?
An automation is a task Claude runs on its own, at a set time or when something happens. Instead of starting each task by hand, you set it up once and let it run.
A rules-based automation tool follows fixed steps. Claude brings judgment: it reads the situation and adapts. Now you can automate work that once needed a person to think it through, like deciding whether an email needs a reply.
An automation builds on your skill: improve the skill, and every run of the automation improves with it.
The three parts of an automation
Every automation comes down to three things. Before you build one, answer these:

What's worth automating, and what isn't
Automations suit tasks that read, organize, or write text and need only light judgment, like answering an email, sorting a message, or summarizing a meeting. Claude is strong there.
They're a poor fit where the result must be exact every time. Take an incoming invoice. Claude can pull it from your email and drop it into your accounting, but it won't get every field right every time. Let Claude do the prep and check the data yourself. The bigger the legal, financial, or safety stakes, the more a human should stay in the loop.
Keep in mind that an automation is only as good as the skill behind it. Test it, and check the output before you trust it, especially early on.
